Mid Year MIPS Check-In: Key Priorities at the Six-Month Mark
By Kimberley Bailey
As we approach the halfway point of the year, it’s the perfect time for a strategic check-in on your Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) participation. A thoughtful mid-year review can help ensure your practice is aligned with MIPS goals, is optimizing performance across categories, and is on track to maximize your incentive potential.
Below are the key focus areas you should review now to stay ahead and finish the reporting year strong.
1. Quality Measures: Are You Tracking in the Right Direction?
By mid-year, you should have collected enough data to analyze trends and identify whether your selected quality measures are performing well—or need refinement.
Key Mid-Year Actions:
Dermatitis and Psoriasis Itch Measures: Ensure consistent documentation of itch severity scores during patient visits. These details are easy to overlook but are critical for meeting measure requirements.
Follow-Up Visits: Use follow-up encounters to close documentation gaps. Review your workflows to ensure quality data capture during these visits.
Measure Review: Identify any underperforming measures and consider if there are alternatives that better reflect your patient population or practice strengths.
2. Promoting Interoperability: Action Items for the Second Half
The Promoting Interoperability (PI) category carries significant weight in your final MIPS score. This is the time to double-check that required actions are in progress and optional bonuses are being pursued.
PI Priorities to Focus On:
Security Risk Assessment (SRA): Begin your annual SRA if you haven’t already—this is a required PI measure.
SAFER Guide Completion: Start reviewing and completing your SAFER Guide for additional compliance and best practice adherence.
Clinical Data Registry Bonus:
Enable data submission to a clinical data registry if your system allows.
This action can earn your practice five bonus points under the PI category.
3. Improvement Activities: Strategize and Finalize Selection
Now is the time to review your Improvement Activities (IA) and make sure your selected actions align with your workflows and staff capabilities.
Consider These Paths:
Traditional MIPS: Choose improvement activities that integrate seamlessly with your team’s existing processes and strengths.
MIPS Value Pathways (MVPs): If you are participating in an MVP, review the IA requirements specific to your chosen pathway. Selecting well-aligned activities boosts both compliance and overall scoring potential.
Final Thoughts: Use This Checkpoint to Course-Correct
The six-month mark isn’t just a status update—it’s an opportunity to course-correct, streamline documentation, optimize EHR settings, and ensure alignment with MIPS requirements. With thoughtful adjustments now, you can reduce stress later and position your practice for a successful finish to the reporting year.
