The Future of Biologic Coordination: Where Are We Headed?

By Brianna Pepin

Biologic and specialty medications continue to reshape the healthcare landscape, offering targeted treatments for chronic, complex conditions—from psoriasis and Crohn’s disease to asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and beyond. But access to these life-changing medications is rarely straightforward.

Biologic coordinators are the unsung heroes who bridge the gap between prescribers, payers, patients, and specialty pharmacies. We've evolved from being administrative assistants to becoming strategic access experts. And as the healthcare system continues to transform, so does our role.

So... where are we headed next?

Let’s explore five key trends that are shaping the future of biologic coordination.

1. From Admin Support to Clinical Navigators

Biologic coordinators are no longer just “the person who does the paperwork.” Today, we are:

  • Interpreters of insurance and step therapy criteria

  • Educators on injection techniques, expectations, and side effects

  • Navigators through complex pharmacy networks and affordability programs

  • Advocates with a growing voice in the care team

Tomorrow’s coordinators will likely become even more clinical—equipped with continuing education, certifications, and possible involvement in provider documentation, case reviews, and care planning meetings. Expect deeper integration into EHR systems and multidisciplinary care teams.

2. Greater Use of Technology and AI

Manual PAs aren’t going away entirely—but automation is quickly changing the game.

What’s ahead:

  • Real-time benefit checks and AI-driven platforms to streamline submissions

  • Reduced paperwork = more time for high-touch patient and provider support

  • A growing need for tech-savvy coordinators who can navigate EHRs, payer portals, and access software with ease

In short: the coordinators of tomorrow will need to be just as fluent in tech as they are in treatment options.

3. Biosimilars and Market Disruption

The biosimilar boom is here—and it’s changing how we coordinate care.

As new biosimilars hit the market for blockbuster biologics like Humira®Stelara®, and Enbrel®, access specialists will need to:

  • Stay current with formulary shifts and payer mandates

  • Educate providers and patients on interchangeability

  • Navigate evolving manufacturer support programs

With more options come more complexities—and new opportunities to lead clinic-wide transitions, cost-savings conversations, and streamlined onboarding processes.

4. Centralized Access Hubs and Collaborative Models

More health systems are investing in centralized teams for medication access support. The future is moving toward:

  • Cross-specialty support roles

  • Standardized workflows and enterprise-wide access strategies

  • New leadership opportunities for experienced coordinators

In these environments, biologic coordinators will shape training, build policy, and help entire networks adopt best practices.

5. Advocacy and Equity in Access

As our visibility increases, so does our responsibility to advocate.

Tomorrow’s biologic coordinators will:

  • Identify and address health disparities

  • Provide input on payer policy and insurance reform

  • Support affordability initiatives for underserved patients

We are not just gatekeepers—we’re advocates. And access is more than a process. It’s a matter of health equity and justice.

Conclusion

The future of biologic coordination is both exciting and essential. As medications become more complex and access barriers grow, the need for skilled, strategic, and compassionate coordinators has never been greater.

We are moving out of the shadows and into the spotlight—playing a central role in patient outcomes, provider success, and system-wide transformation.

With the right tools, recognition, and training, we won’t just follow the access process.
We’ll lead it.

This isn’t just a job.
It’s the future of patient-centered access.
And we’re ready for it.
