The Top 10 Things Only Biologic Coordinators Understand
By Brianna Pepin
Being a biologic coordinator is a unique role in healthcare—equal parts detective, translator, advocate, and cheerleader. Most people outside the specialty don’t quite “get” what we do, but within our world, there are certain moments and experiences that instantly connect us. Here are ten things only biologic coordinators truly understand:
1) The Rollercoaster of a PA Approval
Nothing compares to the excitement of finally seeing an authorization approved after weeks of effort. It feels like winning the lottery—until you remember there’s still a specialty pharmacy to deal with.
2) Hold Music on Repeat
You can hum along to at least three different insurance company hold tunes because you’ve been on the phone that long. Sometimes you even catch yourself humming them at home.
3) Fax Machines Are Still a Thing
In a world of electronic health records and apps, insurers still want a fax. You know exactly where the office fax is, how to unjam it, and you secretly pray every document goes through on the first try.
4) The Joy of a Complete Chart Note
When a provider writes the perfect documentation with all the necessary details for a prior authorization? Pure gold.
5) Explaining Copay Cards for the 100th Time
You can explain manufacturer copay assistance in your sleep—and still, every week, someone looks at you like it’s magic.
6) Patients Who Call You Their Lifeline
When patients say, “I couldn’t have done this without you,” it makes every insurance battle worth it.
7) Renewal Season Stress
The flurry of authorizations expiring all at once keeps your calendar full and your coffee cup fuller.
8) The Dance of Specialty Pharmacies
Navigating which pharmacy can fill a drug depending on the plan is an art form. You’ve learned to anticipate the detours before they happen.
9) The Balance of Empathy and Efficiency
You’re supporting patients through some of their hardest times while juggling dozens of tasks at once. It’s emotional work, but you wouldn’t trade it.
10) The Coordinator Camaraderie
Only other biologic coordinators truly understand the unique mix of frustration and joy that comes with this job. Sharing stories and tips with peers feels like being part of a secret club.

Being a biologic coordinator isn’t always easy, but it’s deeply rewarding. These little moments—both the struggles and the wins—are what make the role so unique. And at the end of the day, we know that every fax, every phone call, and every reminder helps patients stay on the path to better health.
